Seven dead, over 50 hurt in Gadani ship-breaking yard explosion
GADANI: At least seven workers were dead and 50 others injured on Tuesday in an explosion on a ship docked at the Gadani Ship-breaking yard.
Fire-brigades and rescue teams were called in and the victims were being shifted to Karachi for treatment.
Gadani is the second largest ship-breaking yard of the world after Mumbai’s Alang where over 15,000 workers are directly employed while another two million are associated indirectly with it.
Working conditions at Gadani are dismal with no facilities provided to the labour. Deaths of workers in accidents during work had become a routine at the ship breaking yard due to lack of implementation of labor rights and no health and safety arrangements.
