Meet the first US voter: Clay Smith
DIXVILLE NOTCH: Polling for the US presidential elections began in the towns of Dixville, Hart’s Location and Millsfield in the state of New Hampshire just after midnight Tuesday.
A man named Clay Smith was the first of the seven residents — five men and two women — to cast ballots as Tuesday´s long awaited Election Day began. An eighth person voted by absentee ballot.
Voters in these towns are the first across the country to cast their ballots on Election Day.
Under the state laws of New Hampshire, communities with fewer than 100 voters can get permission to open their polls at midnight and close them as soon as all registered voters have cast their ballots.
