webKARACHI: Polling for the by-election in NA-258 Karachi constituency will be held today, Monday amid strict security.

The seat fell vacant after Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Abdul Hakeem Baloch had resigned from the party and joined Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Eleven candidates from different political parties are contesting the elections.

There are 408,163 registered voters in the constituency, which includes 241,792 male and 166,821 female voters.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had announced the by-election on 22nd November. The poll date later extended to 24th November due to the administrative reasons.

The election was again rescheduled after Director General Rangers (Sindh) Major General Bilal Akbar had informed the election commission that the para-military agency has been busy in the arrangements of IDEAS 2016 defence exhibition.

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh A.D. Khawaja has directed the police officers to ensure foolproof security arrangements for the by-election.

A police spokesman said on Sunday that additional police personnel will be deployed at all the polling stations especially those that have been declared sensitive.

The IGP further instructed that the process of sweeping clearance random checking, patrolling, picketing inside and around the polling stations should also be ensured.

He also directed that security of the candidates, voters and polling staff should be ensured.
