HUOSHENSHAN HOSPITAL, A SYMBOL OF CHINESE DETERMINATION
By Zubair Bashir
New coronavirus cases are still raging in china. After the outbreak of the Novel coronavirus, the Chinese government and people did not look back; they stand steady and firm against this epidemic because Chinese people are determined to fight the outbreak. They are writing a feat in the history of human public health. The international community has given extensive attention, positive comments, and support to Chinese efforts. WHO and other responsible agencies, along with the international community, appreciated the quick response of Chinese authorities.
Among these positive but challenging steps was the construction of two hospitals in Wuhan city. As we all know that Wuhan is the epicenter of this Virus, the development of two hospitals was a hard nut to crack. But the Chinese-spirt turn it into reality.
A thousand-bed hospital in Wuhan, Hubei province, started work on Monday, less than ten days after construction began. The new facility will help to ease the deficiency of beds in the city resulting from an increasing number of patients infected with the novel coronavirus.
The new Huoshenshan Hospital is running by 1400 Medical personnel from the People’s Liberation Army. Most of them are specialists in epidemic control, primarily Virus driven disease control. They have experience of work under strict circumstances. They already serve during the devastating earthquake in Sichuan province in May 2008, and they serve the nation at the time of the outbreak of the SARS Virus in 2003. In western Africa, their fight against the Ebola epidemic in 2014 is still in the minds of people.
The military assistance was approved by President Xi Jinping, who is also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission.
The floor area of newly built Huoshenshan Hospital is 34,000 square meters. This hospital is not a diagnostic clinic. It will directly deal with patients who have confirmed coronavirus infection. Expert says that it is a replica of Beijing Xiaotangshan Hospital, which was built in seven days in a Beijing suburb in April 2003 during the outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome SARS. Its purpose was exclusively to treat SARS patients, and it played a vital role in the prevention and control of the deadly disease.
The Construction of Huoshenshan Hospital was formally started on January 25 to fight against coronavirus. This hospital is the result of round the clock efforts of 4,000 workers and about 1,000 construction machines and trucks.
A second specialized hospital for the treatment of the novel coronavirus is Leishenshan Hospital, which is under construction in Wuhan. It is expected to be completed on February 5, 2020.
The construction process of both new hospitals has been live-streamed online every day since the start of the projects. The live¬streaming videos provide a bird’s-eye view of the construction sites, with workers, excavating machines and trucks racing to make the deadline. Million Chinese showed support to the workers at the site.
Today, China is on the front line of humans’ fight against the new coronavirus. The Chinese are telling the world by their actions that they have confidence and courage most needed to fight the Virus.
