Two-time Oscar winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy, has received yet another international award. At the RiverRun International Film Festival – Sharmeen and Emmy award winning director Geeta Gandhbir received the Humanitarian Award for co-directing Journey of a Thousand Miles: Peacekeepers.

The synopsis of the documentary posted by the RiverRun International Film Festival reads, “Three Bangladeshi police officers in a predominantly Muslim, all-female unit are sent to post-earthquake Haiti as UN Peacekeepers for one year. The mission challenges these women and shatters commonly held stereotypes.”

One Bangladeshi police officer says in the trailer, “I must have it all – the love and affection of a mother and the firm resolve of a soldier.”

Upon receiving the prestigious award, Sharmeen Obaid took to Twitter to dedicate it to “the fantastic attitude of Bangladeshi police women.”

RiverRun presented 166 films, representing 44 countries.

The Winston-Salem Journal reports program manager Mary Dossinger as saying, “The films showcased at our festival this year reflected diverse stories from around the world, important social issues, immense talent from both emerging and established directors and a host of passionate projects that are jewels of the independent filmmaking community.”
